New York Dolls Bassist Arthur Kane Dies

Arthur Kane, bassist for the New York Dolls, died Tuesday (July 13th) in Los Angeles due to "complications from leukemia," confirms the group's manager to Billboard. Kane, nicknamed "Killer," was 55.

The news of his death is especially sad since the band had only recently reformed, when ex-Smiths frontman Morrissey (who was once president of the UK New York Dolls fan club) contacted Dolls member David Johansen (host of Sirius Disorder's David Johansen Mansion of Fun) to reunite for the Meltdown Festival. They played their first shows since the '70s in May of this year in New York and went on to play last month's Meltdown Festival in London.

The reunited group was scheduled to perform at next month's Little Steven's International Underground Garage Festival in New York and release an album for Morrissey's Attack imprint in September, but plans for both are now unclear. According to Billboard, Johansen is in Paris preparing a statement on the group's future.

Boys and girls, today's music lesson is Sampling.

"Sampling did not begin with the rap 'geniuses' of the 90s like P.Diddy and Will Smith. Forms of 'sampling' (ie: quoting, allusions) have been used in literature and in music since the dawn of man. In the 50s and 60s, for example, Chuck Berry's distinctive guitar playing was 'sampled' by The Beach Boys, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and more. The Beach Boys & John Lennon even got sued because of it. In the 70s, George Harrison was sued for unintentionally sampling the Chiffons "He's So Fine" when he wrote "My Sweet Lord" (smooth move). So yeah, it's not a new thing, Puffy. When rap and hip hop emerged in the later part of the 20th century, disco proved to be the main source of sampling. Rap's first big breakout, "Rapper's Delight" by the Sugar Hill Gang took the entire song "Good Times" by Chic (which was a #1 hit in 1979, btw) and just rapped different lyrics to it.

Kool and the Gang, James Brown, Parliament Funkadelic, and many disco and soul artists found their songs sampled by these new pioneers. And some didn't like it. Biz Markie, 2 Live Crew, haha, even Vanilla Ice were sued for using samples. "

Sirius - Vacation

I have a new favorite channel on Sirius. For those of you that don't know, Sirius is a commercial-free Satellite Radio subscription service that has about 120 channels of music, news, sports, etc. Thankfully, it's the total opposite of corporate owned, commercial FM radio.

It costs about $10 a month - much less than a CD, with more variety. The cool thing is that you can listen online for free for 3 days to check it out.

I've been a fan of it for years, and they just added a couple new channels, my current favorite being Vacation, which is a nice chill mix of summertime music. Or as they call it "A mix of Tropical, Calypso, Reggae, Hawaiian and island vacation music.".

At a passing glance, it looks like I'm wandering aimlessly.

Except they missed one.

Music is so great. Lately I've been digging back on some old vinyl from late 50's early 60's jazz. Listening to greats such as Ahmad Jamal along with Art Pepper, the Hampton Hawes, and newer stuff like Deltron 3030 and Cluster and some really futuristic stuff from Robert Fripp and Brian Eno. Dig it!

The re-birth of true hip-hop?

"No one knew that hip-hop would not only become a mainstream sort of pop music, but the mainstream youth pop music," "The most popular artist of the past five years has been a white rapper, Eminem. Not a solo singer, not Mick Jagger. It's been a rapper." Mainstream hip-hop has been pasted by Eminem and 50-Cent rapping about gangsters and drugs. In fact most hip-hop heard on today's corporate radio has the same feel.

Despite these problems with the music, there are some rappers who are bucking the trend and are being courageous enough to talk about more diverse themes, including Common, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Mos Def and Dead Prez.

Common is coming off of his fifth album, the eclectic "Electric Circus," with its hit single "Come Close," a tender love song to girlfriend Erykah Badu that featured the vocals of Mary J. Blige. He has grown tremendously from his first album, 1992's "Can I Borrow A Dollar," where he posed for the album cover with a 40-ounce in a brown paper bag. His hip-hop classic, "I Used To Love H.E.R.," a song that protested the proliferation of gangster rap and was the inspiration for the film "Brown Sugar," put him on the map, and marked the beginning of a journey of maturation.

"When you look at the state that (rap) is in, it's very corporate and that's what takes away a lot of the purity of it," says Common. "But I think it's starting to change as people such as myself, The Roots, Talib Kweli and Mos Def are getting more exposure (and) balancing out some of the other hip-hop that lacks the love for the art and the effort of innovation."

Common believes that there are many innovative hip-hop artists out there that just need an opportunity to be heard. "We have to understand that the best stuff is going to be in the underground," he says. "There are people doing independent records right now that are putting out good music, (but) not getting exposure."

In a period when restaurateurs are gleefully flushing bottles of Dom Pérignon down toilets and boycotts of everything from Hermès handbags to Peugeot automobiles are being proposed, now may not be the best time for a French act to be courting the United States. And yet, Les Nubians, a sister duo from Bordeaux, are doing just that, placing music before international politics.

"When I stand onstage, I'm not saying to myself, `Hey, I'm French and I'm up here doing my French thing,' " said Hélène Faussart, 29, as her younger sister, Célia, 25, nodded in agreement during a joint interview in Manhattan recently. "I'm human, and I'm doing what I love the most, which is singing."

"I'm not here representing the French government," Hélène said.

But they are here as representatives of France's blossoming Afropean music scene, a movement the Faussart sisters helped introduce to the United States in 1998 with their debut album, "Princesses Nubiennes," a blend of smooth R&B, Francophone soul and buoyant hip-hop. On the strength of three hit singles "Demain," "Makeda" and "Tabou" (a Gallic remake of Sade's 1980's classic "Sweetest Taboo") "Princesses" sold well over 400,000 copies, earning the duo international acclaim, an American following and a Soul Train Award for best new R&B/soul or rap group (the first ever given to a foreign group).

"Their success was completely unexpected, because traditionally, French music has not done well in the States," said Claude Grunitzky, editor in chief of Trace, a transcultural style magazine based in New York with a bureau in France.

Judging from the initial success of their latest effort, "One Step Forward" (released on March 25), the American backlash against the French has not hurt Les Nubians one bit. The album entered the Billboard Top 200 chart at No. 79, the most auspicious debut for a French-language album in two decades, and the sisters, who now split their time between Philadelphia and Paris, just wrapped up a successful American tour. They will begin another early next month. "Having all those people coming to our shows and not understanding a word and still vibing is a blessing," Hélène said.

Recorded in London, Jamaica, Paris and New York, "One Step Forward" (Virgin) finds the Faussart sisters traversing the African diaspora once again. Motherland drums, ambient Brit-electronica, languorous reggae, Spanish guitars and more combine on this politically conscious potluck of an album. "Forward," the sisters said, is a reflection of the growth the duo has undergone in the four years since their last effort.

"We did so much in that time, traveled all over Ivory Coast, Argentina, Egypt," said Hélène, who is now the mother of a 20-month-old daughter. Her sister, Célia like Hélène a single mother has a 3-year-old son and a 2-year-old daughter. "And we brought all of those beautiful experiences to our music."

The album, which is meant to unfold over the course of a day, begins ebulliently with tracks like "Temperature Rising," which features the American rapper Talib Kweli. As the day progresses, the mood grows heavier. "La Guerre," written after Sept. 11, 2001, asks, "Is it wrong to think that peace exists?" By evening the sisters are singing about subjects often wrestled with under the cloak of darkness. The sensual "Amour à Mort" is a nod to Bizet's "Carmen," while "Si Infidèle" (written for the soundtrack of the film "Unfaithful") deals with the emotional perils of an adulterous relationship.

But for the few songs where Les Nubians sing in Spanish, English and Ewondo (a Cameroonian dialect), "One Step Forward," like its predecessor, remains decidedly French. The sisters acknowledged that their decision to continue crooning in the language of love could potentially alienate listeners who do not know their quiche Lorraine from their croque-monsieur. "We receive a lot of e-mails like, `You're going to do your next album in English, right?' But we're, like, `No,' " said Celia, who, along with her sister, is studying Polish, " `this is not our mother language.' "

This much was evident at a recent sold-out show in New York, when Celia adorably mangled the lyrics to Madonna's 2002 hit "Don't Tell Me." She sheepishly apologized. The crowd went wild. Hélène admitted that she is not much better than baby sister when it comes to belting out American pop songs. "To this day, I can't sing you one of Michael Jackson's songs correctly," she said. "But music has it's own language, and sometimes it doesn't even need words. Music is an art that carries emotion." Daughters of a French father and a Cameroonian mother, the Faussaurt sisters spent their formative years shuttling between Bordeaux and Chad, where their father, an accountant, was a volunteer with the Red Cross at a time when Chad was at war with neighboring Libya. The girls spent afternoons with their father tending to land-mine victims.

"Soldiers were everywhere, and there were guns and all sorts of weapons," Célia recalled. "We saw dead people in the streets, people coming back from battles with no legs, horrible things."

It was not until the unexpected death of their father in 1993 that the sisters began to sing. "It was a way to comfort ourselves and get out the pain," Hélène explained.

At first the two were reluctant to perform in public, preferring instead to put on private shows for friends and family, but after a close acquaintance entered the sisters in a local festival, Nubian Sisters (the duo's original name) was born. Still, the sisters were not expecting success.

Though they are now one of several Afropean French acts fusing nouveau soul, socially conscious rap and global beat MC Solaar, Saian Supa Crew, Assia, to name a few the Faussart sisters remember when they were all too alien to their fellow countrymen.

"We were outcasts in 1998," Hélène said. "They didn't get our soul vision and our African image was even weirder."

But a lot has changed in four years, Hélène added, smiling. "Now they understand," she said.

One of the hip-hop underground's leading lights, this six-piece crew was formed in 1993 at the Los Angeles, California venue Good Life. Rappers Chali 2na, Akil, Zaakir, Mark 7even, and turntable maestros DJ Nu-Mark and DJ Cut Chemist (b. Lucas McFadden) came together from two separate crews, the Rebels And Rhythm and Unity Committee. They debuted for TVT Records in 1995 with the "Unified Rebelution" single. Their position at the head of the late 90s new wave of underground rap, alongside artists including Company Flow, Black Star and Dr. Octagon, was confirmed when the Jurassic 5 EP was released in December 1997. The nine tracks were concise and razor sharp in comparison to the bloated epics being released by the rap mainstream, and the EP was immediately hailed as one of the decade's most important hip-hop releases.

The tracks harked back to the old school attitude of New York's Native Tongues Posse, the seminal late 80s coalition of artists including De La Soul, the Jungle Brothers and A Tribe Called Quest who reaffirmed rap's social agenda. This was evident on the manifesto-defining "Concrete Schoolyard" ("Let's take it back to the concrete streets/Original beats from real live MCs"), which even provided the troupe with a surprise UK Top 40 single when it reached number 35 in November 1998. The other stand-out track, "Jayou", was built around a hypnotic flute loop from Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up'. Cut Chemist and Chali 2na also record with the Latin funk/hip-hop crew Ozomatli, while Chemist collaborated with Shortkut from Invisibl Skratch Piklz on 1998"s jaw dropping Live At Future Primitive Sound Session. Jurassic 5 then signed to Interscope Records, making their major label debut in June 2000 with the superb "Quality Control."

EMINEM is back in the studio - spending time working on the forthcoming albums by OBIE TRICE and D-12.
The rapper, who released a new single 'Sing For The Moment' last Monday (March 3), has been in the studio for the last couple of months.

MTV news reports that Eminem has been working on Trice's debut album, which is due in the spring. Other producers include Dr. Dre and Timbaland.

D-12 are also working on the follow-up due in the summer. Eminem will produce this album also, according to the report.
